About

The NGO Committee on UNICEF is a New York-based coalition of NGOs affiliated with the United Nations, existing since the 1950s.  The committee partners closely with UNICEF to advocate for the promotion and protection of children’s rights worldwide. The NGO Committee on UNICEF is an entity officially mandated by UNICEF to represent civil society and interact with UNICEF’s Executive Board.

Who We Are

First and foremost, every member organization of the NGO Committee on UNICEF is committed to the promotion of the Convention on the Rights of the Child . The membership of the NGO Committee on UNICEF is made up of organizations that are accredited through the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) at the United Nations.  Some members are solely child focused agencies, while others focus on children’s welfare as a component of their work. Each organization liaises with the committee at its base in New York City.

What We Do

UNICEF

The NGO Committee on UNICEF works closely with UNICEF through their Division of Civil Society Partnerships.  Through this mechanism the committee’s membership and UNICEF are able to exchange ideas, receive updates, and collaborate.UNICEF Executive Board

UNICEF Executive Board

The UNICEF Executive Board is the governing body of UNICEF, providing intergovernmental support and oversight to the organization, in accordance with the overall policy guidance of the United Nations General Assembly and the Economic and Social Council. The Executive Board is made up of 36 Member States, elected to three-year terms by the Economic and Social Council, with the following regional allocation: Africa (8 seats), Asia (7), Eastern Europe (4), Latin America and Caribbean (5) and Western Europe and Others (12). (Reference: https://www.unicef.org/about/execboard/)

The NGO Committee on UNICEF is interacting with the UNICEF Executive Board by providing input into the executive board meetings.  UNICEF Executive Board meetings are held three times per year. At each meeting, the NGO Committee on UNICEF delivers an intervention highlighting concerns and provides advice regarding issues particular to the meeting’s agenda based on membership’s observances and expertise from the field.  The NGO Committee on UNICEF has historically held briefings for the member states on the UNICEF executive board (at both the regional and global level) and has co-sponsored side events related to children’s well being.
